If they wore broaches that low and had a long train it must have been for ceremonial purposes. It's not really something you want for tending a fire or looking after kids. I'm not sure what is so prudish about wearing the broaches at the collarbone level. Show off your bling. Plus, who the heck in the far north goes around with just a linen shift and a bit of metal on their chest.
even today, we somtimes dress up in a wildly impratical manner merely for the amusment, so this does not really suprise me. I wonder if everyone who thinks that the clothing served some grave religous purpose has considered the fact that they just enjoyed making fools of themselves. this is not directed to the other posters, but someone is going to claim that they were for X festival.
